ENGLISH

This half term, we will be reading 'The Promise' by Nicola Davies and Laura Carlin

On a mean street in a mean city, a thief tries to snatch an old woman’s bag. But she finds she can’t have it without promising something in return – to “plant them all”. When it turns out the bag is full of acorns, the young thief embarks on a journey that changes her own life and the lives of others for generations to come. Inspired by the belief that a relationship with nature is essential to every human being, and that now, more than ever, we need to renew that relationship, The Promise is the story of a magical discovery that will touch the heart and imagination of every reader, young and old. With poignant simplicity, honesty and lyricism, Nicola Davies evokes a powerful vision of a world where people and nature live in harmony. And Laura Carlin's delicate illustrations capture a young girl’s journey from a harsh, urban reality to the beauty and vitality of a changed world.
SHARED READING

In Shared Reading, we are using a range of books, as part of the 'Steps to Read' programme. This programme helps to move the children on from 'reading and understanding' to being able to predict, explain and infer from the the text, setting them up for success in their KS2 SATs.

Children will use excerpts from these books, but there are copies in the class library for the children to read as a 'Read for Pleasure' book, should they want to.
CLASS READER

Our Class Reader, as voted for by the class children, will be ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty

The unforgettable tale of an orphan in Victorian London, based on the boy whose plight inspired Dr Barnardo to found his famous children’s homes.

When his mother dies, Jim Jarvis is left all alone in London. He is sent to the workhouse but quickly escapes, choosing a hard life on the streets of the city over the confines of the workhouse walls.

Struggling to survive, Jim finally finds some friends… only to be snatched away and made to work for the remorselessly cruel Grimy Nick, constantly guarded by his vicious dog, Snipe.

Will Jim ever manage to be free?

MATHS

This half term, we will be developing our understanding of Multiplication & Division B, then Fractions B, building on from what you have done in previous years.

The table below shows what you will be learning and when. However, these timings are suggested and not set in stone. As children needs further development in some areas and may soar through others, some blocks may take longer than anticipated or less time than anticipated. Also, due to the children's assessment results from Y4, it may be decided to move blocks around to build on children's most recent learning.
