                                             AUTUMN 1 2026-2027

Welcome to Year 5!!!

We hope you all had a relaxing Summer holiday and got plenty of rest. 

We've got a lot to do this final term, with trips, activities and swimming.

 

Monday – Reading records to be handed in, then checked for home reading (3x a week).

 Also, PE ion Thursday, so don't forget your kit!!

On Friday, you sit a weekly spelling test.

You will complete your spelling test and new spellings will be handed out.

 Overall, it is important to say that we are always here to help, so come and find us if you need anything at all!

NOTE: Also, this term I am asking you to use all your wonderful Victorian Learning to make a project. I will hand out a project sheet to everyone, but there is another copy at the bottom of this page. You can follow one of the suggestions on the sheet or come up with a suggestion of your own. All projects must be handed in by FRIDAY 18th DECEMBER 

ENGLISH
 
This half term, we will be reading 'When we walked on the Moon' by David Long.
 
“When I first looked back at the Earth, standing on the surface of the Moon, I cried.” 

This book tells the story of the Apollo Missions, when incredible intelligence, engineering and bravery allowed humans to stand on the surface of something other than Earth for the very first time. From the 1969 first moon landing to the amazing rescue of Apollo 13, each chapter tells the story of a different mission. Humorous details bring the astronauts to life: discover how the astronauts of Apollo 12 were so over-excited when they stepped onto the Moon that Mission Control had to tell them to quieten down, and Shepard (Apollo 14) somehow managed to smuggle a golf club onto his spacecraft! Published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, this is the perfect title for any child who has ever looked up at the moon and wondered what it might be like to go there
SHARED READING
 
In Shared Reading, we are using a range of books, as part of the 'Steps to Read' programme. This programme helps to move the children on from 'reading and understanding' to being able to predict, explain and infer from the the text, setting them up for success in their KS2 SATs. 
 
Children will use excerpts from these books, but there are copies in the class library for the children to read as a 'Read for Pleasure' book, should they want to.
CLASS READER
 
This term, we are reading 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.
 
Liam Digby wanted to see the world, but not quite like this . . . He's just an ordinary twelve-year-old. A very, very TALL ordinary twelve-year-old. Some people even think he's a grown-up.

This is the incredible story of how Liam told some fibs, won a trip to a theme park, made some new friends and sort of, by accident, ended up in space.

MATHS
 
We start the year by consolidating children's understanding of place value, giving them a solid foundation for their future Maths topics.
 
Children will begin with cementing their understanding of place value of numbers up to 7 digits. They will then move onto a deeper understanding of the powers of 10, using this to answer a range of arithmetic and reasoning questions, then comparing numbers by comparing values in specified place value positions before spending some time focusing on rounding. 
 
HISTORY 

 Year 5 will be focusing on History this half term. They will be learning about the Victorian Age, some of the major changes that took place during this time and how children fared through this period. This unit will include a day trip to Quarry Bank Mill.

SCIENCE
 
This half term, we will be learning Earth & Space. They will be learning more about the Earth and the celestial bodies in our solar system. Starting with an exploration of each planet - from Mercury to Neptune - this unit then explores how scientific ideas surrounding Earth's movement and placement have changed and developed over time. The children will complete an assortment of fascinating Mission Assignments - such as making a papier-mache model of the solar system - to deepen their understanding of the Moon, time zones and the night and day cycle. 
 
 
 
REMEMBER - PE is every Thursday afternoon. This half term, we are covering Netball (Outside), so you will need the correct outdoor PE kit:

-White t-shirt 
- Black Shorts/tracksuit pants/leggings 
- Black trainers
- School Jumper (it could get cold)
Remember - No labels or insignias
 
A water bottle is also very handy, as children can take them outside for when needed.
 
NOTE: Year 5 also has swimming from Monday 5th October 2026 - Friday 9th October.
