Phonics

Phonics

In Nursery and our 2 year old provision, the children will be learning Phonics through Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds.

Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children’s speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for when they move on to Read Write Inc. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills.

Phase 1 is divided into seven aspects:
  • Aspect 1 – General sound discrimination – environmental sounds
  • Aspect 2 – General sound discrimination – instrumental sounds
  • Aspect 3 – General sound discrimination – body percussion
  • Aspect 4 – Rhythm and rhyme
  • Aspect 5 – Alliteration
  • Aspect 6 – Voice sounds
  • Aspect 7 - Oral blending and Segmenting

Read Write Inc (RWI)

As children enter Reception they will be starting to learn their Letters using a scheme called Read Write Inc. This means that they learn how to ‘read’ the sounds in words and how those sounds can be written down. This is essential for reading, but it also helps children learn to spell well.

As children learn a new sound everyday attendance and support from home is very important for your child to learn and remember each sound. Your child will be bringing home a sound chart and a key ring of flash cards containing all of the sounds they have learnt. It would be extremely beneficial for you to go over these with your child each night.

Once your child has learnt the first set of 16 sounds they will be learning to blend these sounds together to read words.

Once your child s able to read single words they will move on to reading captions (Ditty's) and sentences (Red-Grey books). The children will read these books in school before bringing them home to re-read and develop fluency and comprehension.
