Birkenhead Park - Swiss Bridge Reopens

27th January 2016

Last week, some of our Year 3 pupils were invited to the reopening of the Swiss Bridge in Birkenhead Park.  The bridge, a Grade II listed structure and an original feature of the park since it opened in 1847, was targeted by vandals last year and damaged by fire.

The £20,000 project restored the bridge to its former glory and was re-opened by Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Chris Meadem.

Park Manager Paul Davies said: “This has been long-awaited.  Every day people have been asking when the bridge is going to be open again.  The interior, which was scorched and blistered, has been repainted and the new deck has been coated with fire retardant and anti-slip paint.”

Cllr Chris Meaden, said: “It’s a wonderful day and I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has been involved in the restoration of our bridge.”
